I have a foldable with a much worse crease. From a few years back, so it's a bit older tech. And it gets worse with wear of course. And guess what, it's not an issue. If you look straight on with the screen on you don't see it.
This is why those pics are always taken from an angle. Because that way it looks much worse. And people who comment how bad it is have seen others use it (from the side) but don't own one themselves. Sure it's a bit of a thing but it's overblown. I've watched whole movies without noticing it. The punchhole is more annoying when you watch full screen video.
Foldables are not perfect, especially the fragility worries me. The price is an issue too but I got an amazing deal on mine. The crease though isn't on my list of bothers.
And for all its issues, don't forget, you get a lot back too. You have a phone and a whole tablet in your pocket. I don't watch much media on it but it's so much nicer for web browsing and reading.

I usually get the new iPhone every fall but I'm hesitant on this one

Get the second gen.
Either it’ll flop so hard that there will be no second gen, or a lot of issues will be corrected in that second gen.

I am cautiously optimistic, especially for people who need both a phone and a tablet in the same device, like my MiL. Certain apps like WeChat makes it extremely annoying to have more than one device.
Now if only they could make a senior’s device like this, geared to cheap price and low specs for large font sizes on a wide device with full traditional phone capabilities. Both my parents could use one, they just won’t at a premium price point.
